Groups are also a fun way to work on developing skills and are a more “authentic” way to access Occupation Therapy (lots of children attend after school groups like sport, music, dance, scouts etc). Group based OT provides your child with an extra-curricular activity that can be incorporated into other areas of their life and extend the learning they are getting at school.
Our group sessions are all play-based, below are some of the group activities we offer:

A small group program for children 3-4years. The focus of the group is on development of play skills, particularly social play with peers (to play alongside and cooperatively with other children).
Parents are active participants and video reviews may also form part of this program. Groups can involve up to six children, with two or three playing together at any one time along-side each other.

This is a group program aimed at those children in their transition to primary school. These groups can differ in context and structure throughout the year. In the first term we focus on being part of a group, playing and socialising with peers. In term 2, we focus more on structured learning experiences and social rules/expectations. In term 3 we focus being able to switch between moving around and sitting to focus as well as sharing resources and working together. Term 4 we specifically focus on mat time and independent work.

This is a group program focusing on developing children’s ability to express themselves through writing. Writing Wizards focuses on building interest and confidence in writing using highly engaging materials and strategies. Children will work on their writing legibility, ability to automatically recall and write letters and words, and produce simple pieces of written work.
Different groups are run each term according to the needs of the children and we have a different focus for each term. Term 1 we focus on children in Year 1 to make sure skills learnt in prep/kinder are consolidated. In term 2 we focus on children in prep/kinder who are just learning to make letters. In term 3 we focus on children in Year 1 who are beginning to write for a specific purpose. In term 4 we focus on children in prep/kinder to ensure they have maximised what they’ve learnt so far.

A group program aimed at children from prep/kinder to Grade Three. We focus on understanding how our bodies run and feel, and how we can also change the way our body feels. We brainstorm strategies so the children leave with a ‘tool kit’ they can use to help calm themselves or make their bodies feel better. Specific social skills are also targeted according to the needs of the children in the group but often included personal space and specific social rules and expectations required at school and other community settings. We give a lot of consideration to grouping of children for this program and ensure compatibility. As a result, we often run separate girls and boys groups, but this is dependent on the individual needs of the children and the specific identified goals.

This program is for school aged children up to Year 3, and is designed to support the development of social skills and peer relationships. Often the playground is where children get the least support and where the biggest issues can occur! We run a range of different group programs that focus on social skills and peer interactions. As you child moves into the older levels of primary school, it can be an important phase to developing the foundations to life-long social skills.
